Sudan has filed a case against the UAE in the ICJ, alleging it is complicit in genocide against the Masalit group by supporting the RSF in West Darfur. The UAE denies the accusations, while the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and widespread displacement. International calls for a ceasefire grow amidst severe humanitarian conditions.
On Wednesday, Sudan initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of complicity in genocide against the Masalit group in West Darfur. The claim states that the UAE has provided substantial financial, political, and military assistance to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, enabling atrocities such as genocide, murder, and human rights violations.
Within the legal filings, Sudan asserted that the UAE’s involvement has facilitated numerous violent acts since at least 2023. The Sudanese government specifically called for the ICJ to impose emergency measures, urging the UAE to take necessary steps to prevent further acts of genocide and related crimes as outlined in the Genocide Convention.
In response, the UAE denied the allegations, which were also presented to the UN Security Council, asserting that it has not supplied any weapons or ammunition to the RSF amid their ongoing conflict with the Sudanese military. This military struggle, which began in April 2023, has resulted in more than 20,000 fatalities and displaced over 14 million individuals, as reported by the UN and local authorities.
While the UN and other international entities have intensified calls for an end to the hostilities, dire warnings have emerged regarding an impending humanitarian crisis, with millions facing starvation and severe health risks. The conflict has escalated dramatically, affecting all but five of Sudan’s 18 states.
Sudan’s case against the UAE at the ICJ underscores significant allegations of complicity in genocide and human rights violations committed by the RSF. Despite UAE’s denials and claims of non-involvement, the conflict continues to escalate with devastating humanitarian consequences, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention and resolution to prevent further atrocities and aid millions affected by the crisis.
