Clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF are intensifying, particularly in Khartoum and Sennar State. Reports indicate heavy fighting with civilian casualties; one attack on a displacement camp resulted in six deaths. The army has initiated a coordinated response to reclaim territory, having regained full control in Sennar. The conflict has led to significant loss of life and widespread displacement since April 2023.
In Sudan, intense clashes have erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in both the capital Khartoum and Sennar State. Reports indicate that heavy weapon exchanges have occurred since early morning, with explosions and significant smoke visible in the area, as per local sources. Activists have also noted ongoing confrontations in the Al-Dali and Al-Mazmum regions, which serve as RSF strongholds.
In another tragic development, a local relief committee in El-Fasher, located in North Darfur State, reported that RSF shelling on the Abu Shouk displacement camp resulted in six fatalities and numerous injuries. Governor Arcua Minnawi decried the RSF’s blockade of El-Fasher, calling it one of the gravest humanitarian violations. The Khartoum State Health Ministry also indicated that RSF mortar attacks injured civilians, including a child, in Omdurman, particularly affecting the Al-Thawra neighborhood and local schools.
In response to RSF attacks, the Sudanese armed forces executed a coordinated operation, reclaiming RSF-held territories in various states. Army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah confirmed the army’s decisive reclaiming of towns including Dali and Al-Mazmum in Sennar, thereby establishing complete control over the region while the RSF continues to inhabit smaller areas in Blue Nile and White Nile states. Since the conflict commenced in mid-April 2023, estimates from the UN and local authorities indicate over 20,000 deaths and 14 million displacements, with some universities suggesting the toll may be as high as 130,000.
The recent surge in violent confrontations in Sudan underscores the deepening humanitarian crisis as battles continue between the Sudanese army and the RSF. With significant civilian casualties reported and entire regions under siege, the situation remains dire, necessitating urgent international attention and intervention. Despite military efforts to regain control over affected areas, the conflict persists, exacerbating the suffering of millions caught in the crossfire.
