The MEA condemned a security breach during Minister Jaishankar’s UK visit, attributing it to a group of separatists. In discussions, Jaishankar addressed international issues, including tariffs and trade negotiations with the US, while also meeting with UK PM Starmer to discuss cooperation on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded to a security breach that occurred during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the United Kingdom. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the actions of a small group of separatists and extremists who staged demonstrations outside Chatham House, where Jaishankar was participating in a session focused on India’s role in the world.
Jaiswal stated, “We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of EAM to the UK. We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists. We deplore the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements. We expect the host government in such cases to fully live up to their diplomatic obligations.”
During his visit, Jaishankar discussed numerous significant international issues. He commented on former President Trump’s reciprocation of tariffs, expressing that the current administration’s approach aligns with India’s interests, suggesting a move towards multipolarity.
Addressing tariff-related matters, Jaishankar mentioned that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in Washington to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement, including follow-up discussions stemming from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with President Trump last month.
In a prior engagement, Jaishankar met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street to relay “warm greetings” from Prime Minister Modi. They exchanged views on bilateral cooperation, as well as the UK’s stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict during their discussion.
The MEA’s statement highlights concerns regarding security protocols during Jaishankar’s UK visit, emphasizing that such breaches should be addressed by the host government. Jaishankar’s dialogue with both the UK PM and discussions on trade reflect India’s strategic foreign policy interests and collaborative efforts with significant international partners.
