Alireza Bigdeli, the interim diplomat of Iran in Kabul, emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts between Iran and Afghanistan to address the challenges surrounding Afghan refugees. He stated that while Iran is committed to finding legitimate solutions, enduring resolutions for undocumented refugees must be prioritized.
In his dialogue with Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Refugee and Repatriation, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, Bigdeli acknowledged Afghanistan’s prohibition of human trafficking. He asserted, “Prohibition of human trafficking from Afghanistan to Iran will strengthen cooperation between the two countries.”
Both representatives highlighted that the refugee issue should be detached from political considerations and that actionable solutions must be implemented. As reported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Iran currently hosts the largest refugee population globally, approximately 3.8 million, predominantly residing within urban environments alongside local communities.
The UNHCR factsheet indicates that 99% of these registered refugees live in cities, while only 1% are accommodated in 21 designated refugee settlements across 12 provinces in Iran.
