The global pandemic likely influenced these figures, leading to a contraction of India’s economy by 7.7% in 2020-21. Various government initiatives aimed at revitalizing economic growth post-pandemic were referenced, suggesting their role in the observed emission reductions.
During his address, Yadav emphasized the importance of inclusivity and co-operation in climate initiatives, particularly from the Global South, which bears the greatest impact from climate change. He encouraged developed nations to fulfill their financial obligations under the Paris Agreement and stressed the necessity for enhanced cooperation in addressing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The Minister also urged increased climate adaptation funding, especially for the most vulnerable areas, to facilitate resilience-building initiatives. He outlined India’s ambitious vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, alongside a target of a 36% reduction in GDP emission intensity by 2020, compared to a future 45% target for 2030.
Furthermore, Yadav highlighted the significance of sustainable energy and domestic manufacturing of green technologies in the 2025 Union Budget, asserting that comprehensive efforts are necessary to combat climate change effectively. He called for reformed global governance, placing equity and justice at the core of climate negotiations.
