Min Aung Hlaing, who assumed power following a coup in 2021, expressed his admiration for Putin, referring to him as a “king” and voiced his support for Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. He stated, “I believe that victory must be yours under your strong and decisive leadership.”
Both Russia and Myanmar face significant Western sanctions; Myanmar for its coup in 2021 and Russia due to its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Russia continues to supply Myanmar with raw materials and fertilizers, while both countries are looking to strengthen their economic partnership amid military and political alliances.
