On February 4-5, 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Iraq alongside the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli. During the visit, they held discussions with Iraqi leaders, including President Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, concerning the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) and the broader NATO-Iraq partnership, as well as regional security issues.
Secretary General Rutte commended the achievements of NATO Mission Iraq, stating, “Since 2018, through its advising and capacity-building efforts, NATO Mission Iraq has contributed to make Iraqi security forces, institutions and structures more effective, inclusive and sustainable for the long term.” He recognized the collaborative efforts with NMI personnel to enhance various sectors, including security education and cyber defense.
The NATO Mission Iraq began at the NATO Summit in Brussels in July 2018, following a request from the Iraqi government. Established in Baghdad in October 2018, NMI is non-combat in nature and aims to enhance Iraq’s security capabilities, enabling local forces to maintain stability and combat terrorism independently. This includes advising key Iraqi institutions on defense, national security, and police operations.
Iraqi authorities have identified essential areas for cooperation with NATO, aiming to strengthen security education, logistics, cyber defense, and principles of good governance. The mission emphasizes the importance of independence and respect for Iraq’s sovereignty while providing critical support for the nation’s efforts toward lasting security and stability for all citizens.
The visit by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasizes the fruitful cooperation between NATO and Iraq, highlighting the significant progress made in strengthening Iraqi security forces and institutions. The ongoing partnership aims to ensure a sustainable and secure future for Iraq, demonstrating NATO’s commitment to supporting its allies in regional stability.
