Việt Nam and Sweden Enhance Bilateral Relations for Future Collaboration

Sweden views Việt Nam as a key partner in Southeast Asia, with potential for further strengthening bilateral ties, as discussed by Deputy Prime Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn and Swedish Parliament’s Aron Emilsson in Hà Nội. They highlighted cooperation in various sectors, the importance of legislative support, and the EU-Việt Nam Investment Protection Agreement ratification, with a mutual commitment to addressing global challenges and enhancing both nations’ relations.

On Monday in Hà Nội, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bùi Thanh Sơn met with Aron Emilsson, the chair of the Swedish Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, who is on an official visit to Việt Nam. Emilsson expressed that Sweden regards Việt Nam as a vital partner in Southeast Asia and recognizes significant opportunities for enhancing their bilateral relations.

The two officials acknowledged the remarkable progress made in their political, diplomatic, trade, and economic relations, particularly as they prepare to celebrate the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2024. Minister Sơn conveyed optimism that this visit would fortify their partnership and encourage further collaboration between their legislative bodies.

Minister Sơn reflected on Sweden’s historical support for Việt Nam’s independence and present-day development, emphasizing the significance of ongoing exchanges and dialogues at state, government, and parliamentary levels. He also advocated for deepening cooperation between state agencies and businesses, particularly in sectors where both countries excel, such as trade, innovation, and education.

Moreover, Việt Nam urged the Swedish parliament to expedite the ratification of the EU-Việt Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) among European Union member states; this would unlock new prospects for businesses and investors from both nations. Emilsson commended Việt Nam’s impressive economic achievements in recent years and underscored a mutual commitment to enhancing understanding and bilateral relations.

During their discussions, both leaders addressed socio-economic development, foreign policies, and international and regional issues of shared importance. They concurred that further cooperation at regional and multilateral forums is essential to tackle global challenges, especially those related to security, peace, and sustainable development.

The recent meeting between Việt Nam and Swedish officials underscores the favorable trajectory of their bilateral relations. Enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including economic partnerships and legislative support, is anticipated. Both countries are committed to addressing global challenges collaboratively while celebrating their longstanding diplomatic ties, thus paving the way for future advancements in their partnership.
