Six East Bank Demerara NDCs Receive Mini Excavators to Enhance Drainage

The Ministry of Agriculture has donated six mini excavators worth $96 million to six NDCs on the East Bank of Demerara, enhancing drainage operations in the area. The initiative, announced by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, aligns with the government’s commitment to supporting local councils. Key leaders, including Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag, were present during the handover ceremony.

Residents in Mocha/Arcadia and surrounding communities on the East Bank of Demerara will benefit from improved drainage capabilities following the distribution of six mini excavators, valued at approximately $96 million, to six Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).

On Friday, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha presented these excavators to chairpersons and representatives of the Eccles/Ramsburg, Mocha/Arcadia, Little Diamond/Herstelling, Soesdyke/T’Huis te/Coverden, and Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra NDCs, with Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag also in attendance.

Minister Mustapha emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing local governance. He noted that President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo recognized the crucial role of NDCs in community development, directing that all NDCs in Guyana receive a mini excavator to support the maintenance and clearing of drainage channels.

The acquisition of six mini excavators for NDCs along the East Bank of Demerara signifies the government’s commitment to improving local drainage systems. This initiative aims to empower communities and enhance their resilience against flooding, contributing to better living conditions for residents. Such measures reflect a broader governmental strategy to strengthen local governance and infrastructure across Guyana.
