Established by Ocalan in 1978, the PKK has fought for an independent Kurdish state within Turkey, which houses a Kurdish population close to 20%. With Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aiming for a third presidential term, he requires support from the Grand National Assembly, which has considerable Kurdish representation. Nonetheless, recent escalations between the PKK and Turkish forces may jeopardize this renewed cease-fire.
