Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has announced plans to request the restoration of a $3-billion military aid package from Saudi Arabia during his upcoming visit to the kingdom. In an interview with Asharq television, Aoun revealed that he will discuss the project with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, seeking to revive the aid that was suspended in 2016 due to Lebanon’s inaction against Iranian attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions.
Aoun, formerly commander of Lebanon’s army, is visiting Saudi Arabia on Monday for what will be his first official trip abroad since taking office on January 9. He emphasized the importance of re-establishing relations with Saudi Arabia for the benefit of both nations, particularly amid shifting regional dynamics where militant groups such as Hezbollah face increased pressure from Israel.
Lebanon has been facing significant reconstruction challenges following extensive damage from previous conflicts and recurring attacks. However, Lebanese officials indicate that foreign support, including assistance from Gulf countries, hinges on the country enacting critical financial reforms. Aoun expressed a commitment to these reforms, emphasizing the necessity for progressive aid to facilitate the return of displaced Lebanese citizens to their homes.
