Hungary has invested significantly in development programs and aims to establish a mechanism to support Lebanon in the long term, calling for collaboration from various stakeholders.

The Hungarian government reaffirms its commitment to supporting Christian communities in the Middle East, recognizing the historical and cultural significance of Christianity in the region. Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized during the conference titled “Lebanon’s Future through Christian Eyes,” that the safety of Central Europe is intricately linked to the stability of the Middle East.

Minister Szijjártó pointed out Lebanon’s pivotal role, especially due to its considerable Christian population. He highlighted Hungary’s moral obligation as a Christian nation to assist Christian communities facing persecution and hardship worldwide.

Addressing the challenges faced by Christians in Lebanon, the Minister stated that Hungary’s objective is to support these communities without leading to their emigration. This approach focuses on local empowerment, aiming to ensure that they remain in their homes and communities.

The Hungary Helps program has significantly invested in aiding Christians in Lebanon, committing tens of millions of dollars to various initiatives. The Minister noted the need for job creation, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities as critical components for community sustainability.

Over the past seven years, Hungary has implemented 38 development programs in Lebanon, amounting to nearly $20 million, which includes restoring approximately 100 ancient Christian churches. The Hungarian government is poised to continue these efforts to fortify Christian communities.

A pressing issue addressed by the Minister was the repatriation of Syrian refugees from Lebanon. He called on the international community to create suitable conditions to facilitate this return, urging a candid discussion about the complex political and economic frameworks necessary for lasting peace in Lebanon.

The conference’s objective was to establish a long-term development mechanism for Lebanon, significantly benefiting Christian communities. Minister Szijjártó expressed Hungary’s readiness to host the secretariat for this initiative in Budapest, hoping for substantial contributions from the Lebanese diaspora, businesses, and foreign entities to realize these goals.

In summary, Hungary’s commitment to supporting Christian communities in Lebanon is pivotal for regional stability and security. Through significant investments and development programs, Hungary seeks to empower these communities and facilitate the safe return of displaced Syrian refugees. The establishment of a long-term support mechanism reflects Hungary’s dedication to fostering peace and resilience in Lebanon.
