Amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war, Türkiye has initiated the “Guest University Initiative” through YÖK, relocating El-Butana University students to Turkish institutions. This program, which includes hosting Bahri and El-Neelain Universities, aims to ensure continuity of education for Sudanese students amid severe disruptions. YÖK’s efforts are recognized as a model for cooperation in the Islamic world.
In light of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, Türkiye has taken significant steps to support displaced Sudanese students. El-Butana University academics and students, whose education was disrupted, have been relocated to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University in Türkiye. The initiative was coordinated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) under the newly launched “Guest University Initiative,” aiming to provide continuity in education for Sudanese students in Türkiye.
Through this initiative, Bahri and El-Neelain Universities from Sudan will also find homes at Selçuk University and Inönü University, respectively. Erol Özvar, the President of YÖK, highlighted that this program not only enhances bilateral ties, but also potentially serves as a model for other nations in the Islamic world. The selected universities are already hosting Sudanese students, fostering a conducive academic environment.
Özvar expressed, “Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University’s Sudanese students are now welcoming fellow academics and peers, continuing Türkiye’s tradition as a hub for education and research.” Since the outbreak of civil strife on April 15, 2023, a staggering number exceeding 20,000 individuals have reportedly lost their lives, creating an extensive displacement crisis and leaving 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.
El-Butana University suffered significant damage, hampering educational efforts, which prompted the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to seek assistance from YÖK. Özvar remarked, “We will never accept the closure of universities,” emphasizing the vital role Turkish-educated graduates have played in various leadership roles across their home countries.
Rector of El-Butana University, Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud, noted their attempts to facilitate online learning were unsuccessful due to inadequate resources. Grateful for Türkiye’s support, he acknowledged, “When we explained our situation, Türkiye was the first country to hear our plea, and we are incredibly thankful for their support.”
Upon arrival at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, Mohmoud recognized the shortcomings of Sudan’s educational framework and pledged to utilize the knowledge acquired in Türkiye to enhance the educational landscape in Sudan.
Sudanese master’s student in biochemistry, Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla, expressed enthusiasm for the practical training opportunities available in advanced university research centers. “Advanced laboratories and research centers will significantly enhance my practical studies. I will take this knowledge back to Sudan and contribute to my country’s development,” he stated.
Similarly, undergraduate student Rashida Ebrahim Hussein was delighted to continue her veterinary studies in Türkiye, stating, “Here, I am learning to use advanced equipment, which I will take back to Sudan. Coming to Türkiye was a fresh start for my academic journey.”
The collaboration between Türkiye and Sudan highlights a strong commitment to education even amidst conflict. The relocation of Sudanese students to various Turkish universities under the Guest University Initiative showcases Türkiye’s dedication to supporting higher education. This partnership not only aids individual students but also strengthens the educational framework of Sudan, fostering future leaders equipped to address national challenges.
