A delegation from Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has arrived in Namibia to participate in the state funeral of Dr Sam Nujoma, the country’s first president and esteemed Father of the Nation. Led by CCM Secretary-General Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, the delegation landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport on 26th February 2025, and was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia, Caesar Waitara.
The CCM officials will engage in a series of commemorative events beginning on 27th February 2025, organized in honor of Dr Nujoma. The national memorial service is scheduled for 28th February, culminating in the state funeral on 1st March 2025 at Heroes’ Acre cemetery in Windhoek. This visit underscores the deep-rooted historical ties between Namibia and Tanzania, particularly through their shared liberation struggle.
Dr Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, was instrumental in Namibia’s fight for independence from apartheid South Africa and was officially recognized as the “Founding Father of the Namibian Nation” via a parliamentary act in 2005. The longstanding relationship between CCM and SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party, has its roots in the 1960s when SWAPO leaders sought sanctuary in Tanzania to support their cause for independence.
