Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu has announced a partnership with Tanzanian security agencies to address the issue of counterfeit and illegal goods crossing the border. This initiative is aimed at mitigating revenue losses and enhancing border security. Residents are encouraged to support these efforts against illegal trade, which poses risks to national interests.
Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu announced that local security agencies are joining forces with Tanzanian authorities to combat the flow of counterfeit and illegal products across their common border. This collaboration aims to address the significant revenue losses the country faces due to unaccounted illegal shipments entering through informal routes. “We have been losing a lot of revenue as a country from individuals who use ‘panya routes’ instead of designated border points of Isebania and Muhuru Bay,” stated Kisilu.
During a meeting at his office, Commissioner Kisilu encouraged residents of Migori, particularly those living near the border, to exhibit patriotism and cooperate with multi-security personnel in this critical effort. He emphasized the importance of vigilance in securing the nation’s interests and urged community members not to assist foreign individuals engaging in illicit trade. “We need to be alert to protect our country and we should not take part in assisting foreigners to cross over with the illegal goods that are not accounted for by our KRA officers,” he asserted.
Kisilu further divulged that cooperative efforts with officials from Tarime, Tanzania, continue to focus on bolstering border safety. He acknowledged the dedication of the enforcement teams, which recently recovered 200 kilograms of sodium cyanide and 400 kilograms of explosives, highlighting their commitment to safeguarding local borders. “The crackdown is not to target anyone but to protect the interests of the country,” he added, recognizing the multi-agency team’s contributions to this initiative.
The ongoing collaboration between Migori County security agencies and Tanzanian counterparts aims to diminish the illegal trade that threatens national revenue and safety. Local residents are urged to actively participate in supporting these measures to combat counterfeits effectively.
