Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Visits Somalia for Reconciliation Talks

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Somalia to engage in talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, focusing on reconciliation and cooperation in security, politics, and economic issues. Despite reports of mortar attacks nearby, the Prime Minister’s delegation departed safely. This meeting follows restored diplomatic ties between the nations after a prior peace agreement facilitated by Türkiye.

On Thursday, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia for discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, aimed at strengthening delicate reconciliation efforts. The talks are set to encompass crucial topics including security, political relations, economic collaboration, and the shared fight against terrorism, as stated by the Somali government.

Upon his arrival, security personnel confirmed that Prime Minister Abiy’s delegation departed the airport without any incidents. However, local residents reported mortar attacks occurring in proximity to the airport shortly after the delegation’s departure towards the presidential palace. A member of Ethiopia’s team expressed unawareness of any such attacks when approached by AFP.

Last year, relations between Ethiopia and Somalia strained following a deal Ethiopia made with Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region, which aimed to provide Ethiopia with sea access. Nevertheless, diplomatic ties were fully restored in January after a peace agreement mediated by Türkiye the month prior.

A source from the Somali presidential palace mentioned that Abiy’s current visit is “part of a broader effort to complete and implement the Ankara agreement,” referring to the accord established in Turkey. Somaliland asserted its January 2024 agreement with Ethiopia would have led to acknowledgment of its independence by Addis Ababa, providing a long-sought naval base for Ethiopia, a land-locked nation. This development provoked significant anger in Mogadishu, culminating in the withdrawal of its ambassador from Ethiopia.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia signifies an effort to strengthen diplomatic relations following recent tensions. Key issues such as security, economic collaboration, and regional stability will be discussed. The backdrop of this visit includes previous agreements and ongoing concerns regarding Somaliland’s aspirations for independence, which have impacted relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.
