Brazil Hosts Inaugural BRICS Sherpas Meeting under its Presidency

The first BRICS Sherpas meeting was held in Brazil, focusing on multilateralism and equity in global governance. Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira emphasized the need for emerging economies’ participation and discussed the importance of the bloc in promoting a multipolar world. The meeting also highlighted discussions on trade, climate change, and institutional strengthening, gathering negotiators from newly expanded BRICS nations.

Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira inaugurated the inaugural meeting of the BRICS Sherpas in Brasilia, marking the commencement of Brazil’s presidency of the bloc. Vieira emphasized that the solution to the current crisis within multilateralism is to enhance multilateral efforts that are robust and inclusive. He highlighted the necessity for emerging economies to secure a more significant role in global decision-making as the international landscape shifts profoundly.

During his address, Vieira stated, “A multipolar world is not only an emerging reality, but a shared objective,” affirming BRICS’s critical role in establishing a more equitable and sustainable global order. He asserted that a rebalanced global system must be grounded in equity and representation, which requires the involvement of BRICS as it embodies the aspirations of the Global South.

Taking place over two days at the Itamaraty Palace, the Sherpas meeting focuses on fostering a multipolar world aligned with Brazil’s presidency priorities. This meeting represents the first gathering of negotiators following the expansion of BRICS last year, which now includes new members such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia, along with various associated countries.

Vieira called for redefining global governance to meet the demands of the 21st century, ensuring that developing countries partake as active participants rather than passive observers. He also cautioned against the rise of protectionism, which could exacerbate existing inequalities, advocating for an open and balanced multilateral trade system that addresses the interests of the Global South.

He urged member countries to develop alternative financial mechanisms, emphasizing the significance of the New BRICS Development Bank in financing sustainable infrastructure projects in emerging markets. As the BRICS president, Brazil aims to prioritize collaborations with the Global South and advance a comprehensive agenda addressing health, trade, climate change, artificial intelligence, the reform of multilateral security systems, and the institutional enhancement of BRICS.

On the second day of the Sherpas meeting, a special session is scheduled to feature Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, with a summary of the meeting discussions to be published in the afternoon.

The first meeting of BRICS Sherpas under Brazil’s presidency has underscored the bloc’s commitment to enhancing multilateralism and addressing global governance challenges. Minister Mauro Vieira’s statements reflect a strong call for representation of emerging economies and a focus on equity. The goal is to promote a multipolar world that meets the needs of the Global South through open trade and strengthened partnerships. Moving forward, BRICS aims to fortify its institutional framework and prioritize critical areas such as health and climate change, demonstrating its dedication to shaping a sustainable future for all member nations.
