In a recent interview, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, underscored the significant outcomes stemming from the recent visit of a high-level Russian parliamentary delegation, led by Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council. This delegation aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, notably health, education, and investment.
The visit, which lasted three days, included a distinguished group featuring the Minister of Economic Development, the Minister of Health, representatives from the Ministry of Finance, and officials from major Russian institutions. The ambassador emphasized the necessity of enhancing legislative cooperation and refining regulatory frameworks to bolster bilateral relations.
Ambassador Terekhin highlighted that the ministries of health from both nations have agreed to collaborate more closely in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Substantial humanitarian aid, including medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, has been provided to the Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa as part of this initiative.
In the educational sector, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science has partnered with Rossotrudnichestvo to open several important educational centers in Addis Ababa, including the Russian Language Center and an ‘Engineering Class’ from St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University.
The ambassador noted that there is considerable interest among Russian businesses in Ethiopia’s agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, mining, information technology, and tourism sectors. He also addressed Ethiopia’s role in the BRICS bloc, indicating that the country’s integration coincided with Russia’s chairmanship, advocating for stronger ties between BRICS nations and African interests.
A significant highlight of the Russian delegation’s visit was the inauguration of the Sputnik Africa international news agency, deemed essential for advancing media cooperation and providing accurate information within Africa.
