Qatar’s Prime Minister announced support for Lebanon’s reconstruction after a new government is formed. During a visit to Beirut, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani announced that Qatar would aid Lebanon in its rebuilding efforts following the destructive Hezbollah-Israel war, contingent upon the establishment of a new government. Lebanon, facing prolonged crises, is reliant on Gulf states for reconstruction funding, recalling Qatar’s involvement post-2006 conflict.
Al-Thani confirmed, “When it comes to economic support and support for reconstruction, there is no doubt that the State of Qatar will be there,” following his meeting with newly-elected President Joseph Aoun. He expressed optimism about forming a “strategic partnership” with Lebanon once a government is in place.
Al-Thani also aimed to engage with senior officials, including with Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam, who has faced challenges in forming a government. Qatar, alongside the U.S., France, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, advocated strongly for Lebanon’s recent presidential elections after a two-year political void.
Since November 27, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been in effect after extensive hostilities, including two months of war. Al-Thani stressed the importance of Israeli forces adhering to withdrawal agreements, calling for peacekeepers and the Lebanese army to be the only entities present in southern Lebanon.
The agreed truce stipulated the Lebanese military’s deployment alongside UN forces during Israel’s withdrawal, which has faced delays. Both parties have exchanged accusations of ceasefire violations. Al-Thani assured continued Qatari humanitarian aid to Lebanon, as well as support for its financially strained military, which also receives assistance from the United States and other nations.
