During the protests, other embassies, including those of Belgium, the Netherlands, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States, have also suffered damage as demonstrators reacted violently amidst escalating violence in the eastern regions of the DRC. Eyewitness accounts reported that police resorted to teargas as crowds looted and set fire to sections of diplomatic properties.
The protests are rooted in the advance of M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwanda, into Goma, a key city in eastern DRC, prompting calls for international accountability regarding Rwanda’s involvement. “We denounce the hypocrisy of the international community,” stated protester Timothee Tshishimbi, urging global leaders to pressure Rwanda to cease its actions.
In response, Germany announced the cancellation of planned government talks with Rwanda, emphasizing that development discussions will only be revisited once the violence ceases and M23 withdrawals occur.
