The project, executed with UK-based Dega Broadcast Systems, introduces custom solutions that streamline workflows and prepare for future expansion.
Rex Mogotsi, Project Manager, emphasized the transformative advantages of this shift, stating that it was driven by the need for increased operational flexibility. He highlighted that the IP technology simplifies connections, minimizes the equipment footprint, and enables remote operations, thereby enhancing workflow efficiency.
The IP framework provided by the Type R system significantly reduces costs related to cabling and maintenance. Its modular architecture permits scaling operations based on specific demands, thus improving production efficiency and facilitating collaboration across the station. Mogotsi remarked, “This ensures better quality content with quicker turnaround times.”
Within the installation, Radio Botswana’s studios are meticulously equipped for diverse production requirements. Live broadcast studios are configured with control surfaces featuring up to 16 faders, while editing studios use smaller setups with six to eight faders. News studios support 8 to 12 faders to adapt to various program formats and specifications.
Mogotsi detailed how the modular system optimizes each studio for its unique production challenges and allows for smooth transitions between studios. Three DSP cores are deployed across six studios, supported by 11 cores spanning all 14 studios, enhancing resource sharing and cross-studio collaboration.
This updated configuration greatly improves operational resilience, enabling simultaneous tasks such as live broadcasts and backup recordings. Furthermore, it sets the stage for future initiatives. Graham Murray, International Sales Manager at Calrec, remarked that Radio Botswana intends to launch a new channel and explore distributed production capabilities.
