Fierce clashes between the rebels and government forces have characterized the mineral-rich eastern region, leading to the displacement of over 200,000 individuals. The head of the Congo River Alliance, which encompasses the M23, Corneille Nangaa, affirmed, “Minova is in our hands.” The provincial governor, Jean-Jacques Purusi, has corroborated this information, while sources in Goma also confirm the fall of Minova to the rebels.
The ongoing violence has resulted in a significant influx of casualties receiving medical attention in Goma’s hospitals. Myriam Favier, of the International Committee of the Red Cross, reported that between early December and January, the number of patients drastically increased, indicating the severe health implications of the conflict.
Since 2021, the M23 has intermittently fought for control over expansive areas of eastern DR Congo, displacing countless residents. Although there was a temporary ceasefire in late July, hostilities reignited in October and escalated towards the year’s end, indicating a troubling trend in regional security.
Amnesty International has highlighted a disturbing rise in assaults on civilian areas by both conflicting parties, causing dire repercussions for local populations over the past month. While the M23 is frequently described as a proxy for the Rwandan government, claims of direct support have been denied by Rwanda, despite a UN report from last year acknowledging the presence of Rwandan soldiers alongside the M23.
Despite multiple diplomatic efforts by neighboring nations to mediate the conflicts, these initiatives have not yielded effective resolutions. Recently scheduled talks between Congolese and Rwandan leaders on December 15 were abruptly canceled due to unresolved disagreements.
The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been marred by sporadic violence for over two decades, primarily fueled by political instability, ethnic tensions, and competition over rich mineral resources. The M23 rebel group, which has emerged as a significant player in the eastern region, has been accused of having links to the Rwandan government, which Rwanda consistently denies.
