In celebration of National Space Day, the Italian Embassy in the Dominican Republic, in partnership with the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), alongside Pedro Henríquez Ureña University and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec), convened a conference titled “Promoting Aerospace Development: Italian-Dominican Cooperation” at Intec.
This event gathered students from both Intec and the Don Bosco School, providing them with insights regarding the significance of developing nano-satellites, which can yield crucial data for monitoring environmental issues such as the influx of sargassum, marine biodiversity, and risk prevention strategies.
Marco Lisi, the special envoy for space from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, expressed his support for the Dominican Republic’s initiative to enhance its capabilities in the observation, collection, and analysis of aerospace data. He also presented on the advancements within the Italian space sector while commemorating the 60th anniversary of Italy’s first satellite launch, San Marco I, which occurred on December 15, 1964.
In addition, Paolo Marzioli, a lecturer at Rome’s La Sapienza University, highlighted the crucial role that advancements in space technology play across various sectors, including aeronautics, physics, specialized software development, mechatronics, and electronics.
Furthermore, Rodolfo Colaci, Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo, underscored the essential nature of cooperative efforts and space diplomacy amid complex global challenges. Teodoro Jiménez, head of Geomantics at CNCCMDL, defined the importance of Italy’s alliance with the Dominican Republic in advancing space initiatives, particularly in establishing the National Centre for Processing Climate Archives, Satellite, and Drone Images. Lastly, Edwin Sánchez Camilo from Intec’s Mechatronics Department discussed the Quisqueyasat-1 project, reiterating the necessity of monitoring the sargasso phenomenon and laying groundwork for future, more sophisticated projects.
