He has studied philosophy at the Faculty of Theology of Uruguay and theology at the Centre Sèvres in Paris, later earning postgraduate degrees including a Master’s and Doctorate in Canon Law and Philosophy of Law from prestigious institutions such as Université Paris II, Institut Catholique de Paris, and Universidad Católica Argentina. Ordained a priest in 2010 by Bishop Nicolás Cotugno in Montevideo, Father Álvaro has held numerous significant roles within the Catholic University of Uruguay, including Director of the Department of Philosophy, Dean of Law, and Vice-Rector for University Environment between 2011 and 2021. He also served as Parish Administrator at Nuestra Señora de Fátima from 2014 to 2018 and has been a Judge at the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Montevideo since 2012. Currently, he is the Rector of the Seminary College in Montevideo and the Superior of its community. His diverse experience positions him well for this new leadership role within the Jesuit Province.
